part 131: (sabreen)

“How was your weekend breeni?” Hilda asked sabreen on their way home on sunday evening.

Sabreen had been very quiet for most of the way. She was deep in thought about tony. What was going on with him. And she was very worried about her sister too. So when aunt hilda spoke to her, she snapped out of her train of thought to answer.
“Hmm.. It was uhm.. Okay I guess”

“What did you and alice do this weekend?” Hilda asked since sabreen wasn’t volunteering much.

“Uhm, we just sat up till late catching up and we went out shopping aswel and bought some take outs… Nothing major” sabreen shrugged.

“Okay.. As long as you enjoyed yourself. ”

Hilda and mike exchanged looks… And smiled.

“So sweety… Remember we were talking about a surprise for you the other day?”

Now this got her full attention and excitement…

But before hilda could answer, mike hit the brakes and hooted at the crazy car infront of them. They almost went straight into it. The driver of the car infront decided to suddenly take a turn without any indicators.

They were all startled by this. It had their hearts beating a little too fast.

“Are you okay sabreen?” Mike turned around to ask her, concern etched all over his face.

Sabreen nodded and his eyes went to where she was holding the hand rest of the door so tightly that her fingers were almost white. She let go when she realised and calmed down a little.

She had never been in an accident before and even though this wasn’t an accident, it was pretty much close to one.

“Alice, are you sure you’re okay? Did tony come back home?” Sabreen whispered through the phone once they were settled back home.

“No he hasn’t breeni. I’m really worried about him. But I’m fine. You know I’m a strong person”

“Well you don’t have to always be. You know that you can talk to me, anytime.”

“I know. I miss you already little sis. It was so good to have you again this weekend.”

Sabreen smiled. She missed her sister too. “Its always amazing spending time with you alice”

“Who knows, maybe soon you’ll have to move in with me. And that will be so much fun.”

“Move in with you? Why?”

“Cos… You’ll be working at that ham burger place we went to the other day.” Alice laughed.

“No way! Do you see me being a waitress?ha uh.. and besides, you’re going to be married soon to the owner anyway, then you’ll forget all about me ” sabreen teased and giggled.

“Whatever! Anyway, I’ve got to go do some studying now. I love you!”

“Okay, I need to go too, love you too….!”

Sabreen hung up the call and joined hilda and mike in the kitchen to help prepare supper. They were just having some light foods of chicken wraps and fries.

Sabreen set the table and once the food was ready, they all 3 sat down to enjoy their meal together.

Sabreen smiled to herself as she thought about how life had changed. About how she finally felt like she was part of a family and about how she felt so loved by them. She wouldn’t want it any other way.

But then she thought about beth and sam and wondered how they were. Did they ever think about her? Were they still the same drunk people or had they changed?

Mike cleared his throat, breaking sabreens thoughts again.

“So breeni, what do you say about a trip overseas? New york city actually?”

part 130: (nicholas+hanzalah)

**”Bismillahir rahmaanir raheem”
-in the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful-**

Hanzalah couldn’t concentrate for the rest of the day. He was in utter distress. What did he get himself into? And how was he going to get himself out of this?

He was never more relieved for the day to come to an end like he was today… He had to go back home and speak to nick.

Nick roamed around the house aimlessly. He was bored out of his wits… And he was feeling a little hungry.

Hanzalah did say that he should make himself at home.

He walked into the kitchen and began opening the units one by one in search of some junk food or snacks. Maybe some biltong or chips or even some 2 minute noodles would do. But hanzalahs kitchen was very different to his.

After searching through the kitchen fridge, hanzalah gave up. Nothing looked familiar or appealing to him.

He threw himself on the couch and looked at the time. It wasn’t long to go before hanzalah would be back from school. Then atleast he wouldn’t feel so bored and annoyed.

Tasha walked in to the police station to file a missing person report. It was probably the hardest thing that any mother would have to do, but nick was missing for over 24 hours now.

“But ma’am, what if the kid is not actually missing? What if he just ran away.. You know how teenagers are nowadays. Always upto mischief…I’m sure he’ll come home soon- unharmed”

Tashas blood was boiling. First they refuse to file the report because it wasn’t 24 hours and now they just don’t want to help find her son.

“Whether he ran away or was kidnapped, I don’t care… I just want my son to be found. He’s not used to being on the streets all alone. He comes from a good and wealthy home. He won’t survive out there… I’m worried sick about him. This is south africa. What if someone hurts him”

The officer behind the counter looked blankly back at tasha whilst chewing on gum.

“Look, are you going to help me find my son or not?”

She just continued chewing….

“Here… Fill this in!” She finally said handing tasha some forms and then picking up her phone and typing away.

*assalamu alaykum….” Hanzalah greeted loudly as he entered the house. It was his habit.

Abdullah dropped them all off at home before returning to work again.

Nick sat up from the couch.
“Hey bro! How’s it?”

hanzalah forced a weak smile out and nodded a “I’m fine”

“Did you eat anything?” He avoided looking at nick.

“Erm… No, wasn’t really hungry!” Nick lied

Hanzalah put his bag away and proceeded to the kitchen to prepare lunch.

Once the food was warmed up, he took a tray for naeema and habEeba to the room and then nick and hanzalah sat in silence whilst munching on their chapatis and green lentils.

It had a distinct taste but nick couldn’t be fussy. Besides, he was starving.

“So?” Nick broke the silence. “How was school?”

Hanzalah swallowed hard and without meeting nicks gaze replied: “same old…”

Suddenly he didn’t feel like eating anymore. The knot in his tummy that he carried around all through the day was back again. He licked his fingers hastily and sat up, leaning against the sofa behind him. “Look nicholas.. We need to talk!”

part 129: (sabreen)

**”Bismillahir rahmaanir raheem”
-in the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful-**

There was a knock at the door just as sabreen placed her plate in the kitchen sink.

“I wonder who that can be…” Alice said nonchalantly as she got off from the bar stool and headed for the door.

she opened the door to find the policeman from the night before, standing in the doorway. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment at the thought of running away like a coward last night.

“Err.. Officer…. what…err.. Please come inside” she said nervously and moved to the side making space for him to enter.

He stepped inside and alice close the door before beginning to explain herself.
“Look officer. I’m really sorry about last night. I just couldn’t go through with it alone. And I’m glad I didn’t becau…”

She was cut off by the officer… “Ma’am… I’m not here about last night. We’ve already identified the body and we know that its not your brother. ”

“Yeah he…” She began but was cut-off again.

“We’re here for a different reason now. We’re looking for your brother as he may be involved in the murder of the boy who’s body we found yesterday….”

“What? My brother? A murderer? Are you out of your mind?”

Alice was enraged…

“Calm down miss. We did his drivers licence at the murder scene and that’s the only lead we have at the moment..”

“So just because You found his licence there doesn’t mean he killed someone! You’re supposed to be the cops… Why don’t you do your homework properly!”

“Miss williams, we’re just doing our job and following the leads we have. We’re not saying that he definitely killed anyone as yet..”

“For your information, tony lost his drivers licence there last week when he went fishing at the dam with his friends..”

“Is that so miss williams?”

“Yes! He said so. And I trust my brother…”

“Do you miss williams?”

“What’s that supposed to mean? Ofcourse I do!”

“Okay, can you tell us where he is at the moment? We just need to ask him a few questions please..”

Alice didn’t know what to say. She shifted her feet on the ground and played with her fingers trying hard to think of something to say. But the truth was, she was doubting tony herself.. And everything she just said was just to reassure herself more than anyone else..

“I… I don’t know where he is.. He’s gone out somewhere.”

“Hmmm… You have any idea what time he’ll be back?”

Alice looked towards sabreen who was standing silently in the kitchen with a blank look on her face, then faced the officer again and shrugged..

“I don’t know…” She whispered.

The officer nodded.
“Thanks you miss williams. Sorry for taking up so much of your time.”

He pulled out a tiny piece of paper from his pocket and scribbled something on it.
“Well this is my number. Please call us the minute he’s home. We just want to have a few words with him”

Alice hesitated at first and then slowly reached for the paper.

She was still staring at the paper when the officer walked out and closed the door behind him.

“Alice! Do you think?” Sabreen asked once the door was closed.

“I don’t know sabreen… I don’t know anything okay!” Alice snapped.

She sat down on the couch with her hands over her face.

“Why does our lives have to be so complicating huh? Why? Why can’t we just live normal lives like everyone else in this world? Happy homes with 2 normal and responsible parents. Siblings that annoy you but you can still trust with your life. Family and friends to support you in happy times and sad….”

Sabreen sat down beside her sister. She didn’t offer any comfort lest she would be snapped at again. And she didn’t offer any words for the same reason.

“Do you think he did it?” She suddenly looked up and asked sabreen… “Do you think tony is a murderer?”

part 128: (hanzalah)

**”Bismillahir rahmaanir raheem”
-in the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful-**

Hanzalah entered the school gates and found a strange buzz around today. Everyone seemed really chirpy and excited for a monday morning. It definitely wasn’t a blue monday for everyone else besides hanzalah.

Hanzalah was exhausted. He didn’t get to have that lovely sleep after fajar salaah on sunday morning because of nick. But its okay.. He’ll cope.

As usual hanzalah looked down as he walked through the bustling corridors of the school.

He heard a few disturbing snippets here and there on his way.

“Wonder if he’ll come to school today.”

“Definitely going to get into big s*** ”

“That’s if they haven’t already found him and locked him up”

Hanzalah didn’t mean to eavesdrop but their gossip was pretty loud not to overhear.

This made hanzalah wonder even more about nick. Was everyone talking about him?

What had he actually done that bad to get everyone talking like this?

Why would they want to lock him up?

Now he began worrying a little. Did he do the right thing by keeping nick? What if nick did something really bad and now he and his family would be held responsible for keeping him in their home.

As he got into his classroom and sat down on his chair, he decided to take a deep breath and make a little bit of thikr (thinking of Allah)…

“Astaghfirullah astaghfirullah.. Astaghfirullah.. Astaghfirullah….” He chanted inaudibly.

This seemed to have done the job. It relaxed him a little.

Once the siren rang, indicating that everyone needed to head to their respective classrooms, he pulled out his literature books and started browsing through the pages.

The classroom started filling up and a few minutes later, the teacher entered.

“Good morning class. I hope you all had a relaxing weekend ‘SaFE’ in your homes”

Hanzalah caught on the sarcasm in mr abrahams voice. And everyone cleared their throats and shifted in their seats whispering to eachother…

“Right!! Order please!!.. More of that later in assembly with the principal. For now, open up to page one hundred and thirty two.”

Everyone began turning pages whilst hanzalah seemed to be the only confused one in class. He had no cellphone and had no interest in social media whatsoever so he’s feeling left out was quite understandable.

Usually it doesn’t bother hanzalah in the least, but today he was curious. Infact, he was very curious, because he felt part of it in a way.

He couldn’t even concentrate on anything in class for the first time ever and kept glancing at the clock since mr abrahams had said that there would be an urgent assembly just after the first subject.

The minute the buzzer sounded, everyone was eagerly out of their seats and heading toward the assembly area.

‘That’s strange’ hanzalah thought to himself. Every other day, everyone dreads assembly.

‘Guess its time to find out what all the excitement was about today and whether nicholas had anything to do with all this or not’ hanzalah thought pulling his books in his hand and heading in the direction of the courtyard himself.

He stood quietly one side and waited for the principal to appear. But when he finally did, the look of anger on his face today just made everyone dead still and quiet instantly.

“I’m sure all of you are well aware of why this assembly has so urgently been called. Whoever of you have been involved in this weekends nonsense need to own up as soon as possible. There’s no hiding because nothing ever remains a secret and the truth will come out. And if you did not confess and are caught afterwards, you will be expelled from this school. That goes for anyone who knows of the whereabouts of mr.nicholas abed aswel.”

part 127: (hanzalah+nicholas)

**”Bismillahir rahmaanir raheem”
-in the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful-**

Nick was over exhausted and had a headache from hell. He lay awake pondering about hanzalahs wise words. The kid was so young yet so wise.

nick tried hard to sleep. But I guess it sometimes occurs that when you’re over tired, its harder to fall asleep.

Hanzalah had insisted that nick have his room all to himself. There was an extra room and he would give nick some space.

Nick wondered if tasha and tom were looking for him. He knew that at some point he would have to go back home. But he wasn’t ready just yet.

He felt a certain sense of calmness here at the gujiwalas residence. They were such warm and good hearted people.

And he feared what would happen if he went back. Would he be taken to jail for being underage with so much of alcohol and drugs?

Can kids his age even go to jail?

He knew that this was the end of his education. The school had given him far too many chances. They were definitely not going to give him any more.

He was feeling terribly edgy without his stash and even more so without his phone.

He felt feverish and sweaty. Nervous and drained.

This was the longest he’s been without it in a long time.

Withdrawal symptoms.

Nicks eyes fluttered open to the soothing sound of some muffled words just outside the room. He must have just dozed off when the sound went on. Well that’s how he felt. Like he only slept for 5 minutes.

He couldn’t get his body up. He was beyond exhausted.

Nick was about to close his eyes again when he heard the door slowly squeaking open. Hanzalah had come to check on nick.

“Heyyy!” Nick slurred, half asleep..

“Oh I’m so sorry for waking you up…” Hanzalah said in a panic.

“Its cool bro…I was up already… You didn’t wake me.” Came nicks reply.

Hanzalah calmed down and walked towards the bed and sat down on it. “What’s up? The bed not comfy enough?”

“no no… It is.. Very comfortable…”

“So then? Talk to me… What’s on your mind?”

Nick shrugged but remained silent in deep thought.

“I won’t push you to talk.. You know that.. But when and if you’re ready.. My ears are open k”

Nick forced a grateful smile.

“I’m just going to pray.. I’ll be back in a few minutes”

“Aren’t you going to church to pray?”

“Not today… My dads gone… And you’re here.. So I’ll just pray at home today.”

Hanzalah didn’t want nick to feel bad so he didn’t go into detail about how it wouldn’t be appropriate to leave a strange boy alone in the house with his young sister and step mother. But he was very concerned about what to do about school. Nick wasn’t going anywhere and hanzalah had never missed a day of school thus far. He’s very punctual usually. So he had no idea what they were going to do with nick for the rest of the day. But he kept his concerns to himself until he figured something out

“Ok nicholas…. Please make yourself at home. The fridge is stocked up and well basically…..just make yourself at home okay?”

“Thanks bro… I really owe you…by the way, if anyone asks you…”

“No-ones going to ask me. Trust me!”

Hanzalah was right. Why would anyone ask him about nicks where abouts. He would be the last person anyone who ask.

Nick watched hanzalah and his family leave the house and close the door behind them and then he heard their car reverse out of the driveway.

He took one look around the house and sighed deeply.
“I guess I’m going to have to find something to do for the next couple of hours or else I’ll be bored out of my socks..”

“Look at yourself nick! You’re talking to yourself…”

Nick shook his head and walked around the house aimlessly.

“Where do these people keep their TV?” He mumbled to himself again.

After a few dragged minutes, nick decided to go back to hanzalahs room and try to get some sleep. There was absolutely nothing to do and he was quite exhausted and edgy.

The house was so quiet that he could hear the clock ticking somewhere in the house. It took nick another hour before he decided…
“Maybe I should call my mother….”
