Part 156: (hanzalah)

Hanzalah and his family loved having a full house. All their family was abroad and because they werent so wealthy, they didnt have many friends coming over. It has always been about status and wealth in their town.

He had passed his final exams and achieved excellent results. He had already applied at a couple of universities and no doubt with his results, he had many options of which to choose.

Along with studying medicine, hanzalah enrolled for a part time aalim and hifzul quraan course.

He was considering only doing the aalim course and taking a leap year from university but eventually decided that he might manage both. If he found it tough, he would leave medicine until he was done with his islamic studies.

Beta, can you please put the bowl of kheer in the fridge to chill?…

Naeema was very busy preparing for the guests from america. They arrived in south africa 2 weeks ago but were travelling around to different towns for conferences and meetings. They currently were at a hotel nearby where they checked in earlier this morning and were due for lunch at anytime.

Just as he closed the fridge he heard some car doors closing in the driveway.

Khalla i think theyre here… let me finish frying those few chapatis for you. You can go to your room now.

Hanzalah took the rolling pin from naeemas hand.

Naeema wiped her hands on a kitchen towel and removed her apron.she then hurried off to her room where she would be until the guests left. There were only a couple of men and mo ladies so ofcourse it would be totally improper for her to be around. Besides, hanzalah and abdullah were both responsible enough to take over and oversee their guests.

Once all the rotis were fried, hanzalah cleared up the kitchen, rinsed his hands and went to the lounge to greet.

And this is my son hanzalah

Abdullah beamed as hanzalah walked in.

He just completed his final year at school alhamdulillah.

Aah..achaa…very good son

One of the elder men shook hanzalahs hand and drew him in for a quick fatherly hug.

So what do you intend doing now?

Another man asked with much interest.

Hanzalah kept up the conversation, explaining to them what his future plans were, while abdullah headed for the kitchen to dish up the food. He had very limited time before he needed to go back to the shop. And the guests also needed some rest and were probably starving.

Hmmm. Its so good to finally eat food that tastes like our own. Everywhere we go, its just fancy fancy food.

Prawn this and portugese that.. nothing beats a good home cooked curry.

One of the men remarked and everyone laughed…

Maaf.. may i use your bathroom?

One of the much younger of the men asked.

Jee, jee.. no problem

..let me show you.

Hanzalah said as he hurriedly stood up.

No no..you are still busy eating. Dont get up beta. Just tell me where to go.. im sure il find it.

Okay… turn right here..go down the passage, then left and its the first door on your right

.

Teekhe.. jazakallah

The young man headed in the direction that hanzalah told him. He turned right and found an interesting frame on the wall. He always loved great artwork and he noticed that it was the only item of luxury that this warm family seemed to possess. He didnt notice any other frames in the house or any ornaments of any kind and he admired that.

After appreciating the intricate piece of art, he continued towards the bathroom but when he got to the intersection, he couldnt remember if hanzalah said left or right..

I think he said right and then the first door on the left. He thought.

He hurriedly walked into the first room on his left after taking a right turn and closed the door behind him, making sure to lock it. Only when he turned around did he realise that it wasnt the bathroom…

and he wasnt alone.

And He couldnt believe the sight before him.

Part 155: (sabreen)

Yes this is her sister

Yes i was the one who brought her in

I dont understand, is everything alright?

Really?

She what?

Hilda placed the phone down and looked like she’d just seen a ghost.

Everything alright babe?

I.. i dont know

Who was on the phone?

It was the rehab…

And? Is everything okay? Is beth alright?

Hilda put her head in her hands and shook her head and then pulled her hair in frustration.

Honey? Whats going on?

They called to let me know that beths been acting out alot. That she refused to co-operate or do anything that they ask her to…

Mike waited for something worse. Because surely that couldnt be what surprised hilda. She should have expected that from beth. She isnt the easiest person to deal with.. and beth is known for her stubbornness.

Mike never did like beth. He just stomached her attitude for the sake of his wife. He tried to never run her down for hildas sake. But he too was beginning to get annoyed. Beth was a grown woman who has caused so much of hurt and pain to so many people who ought to be respected and cared for.

All 3 of beths kids have led terrible lives because of her immaturity. She needed to pull up her socks and wake up now. She asked to be sent to rehab. She wanted this change. Nobody forced her to make this decision, so she needed to get a life..

Shes gone!

Hilda finally said..  pulling mike out of his thoughts.

Excuse me?

Shes gone mikey… you were right…again

Gone where?

Hilda sighed..

beth signed herself out. Shes gone from the rehab

But thats not possible. She cant sign herself out

But shes gone… how else would she have gone? She didnt escape… thats what the lady at the centre said. That she was signed out and left.

They both were quiet before looking at eachother. Realisation.

Sam

They muttered at the same time.

Oh that dog!

You were right mikey. Im glad that we didnt involve the kids. It wouldve been harder for them if they had gone to see her and then she did this. In a way im glad they never forgave her. I wish i never did.

You just did what you thought was right sweetheart. You are a good natured woman with a soft and forgiving heart. You cant change who beth is. Beth and sam will never change. Just dont get too caught up again.

And to think all our plans for a great vacation got cancelled because of her. Im just so angry.

Its okay. We can always reschedule. Although now wouldnt be such a great idea. Sabreens tutor says that theres quite abit of work she would like to complete with sabreen. She needs to close up earlier as she will be going on maternity leave soon.

I guess then we should rebook once she is done for the year, but prices for year end are sky high.

And we have got enough time to save up

Mike hugged her and kissed her forehead lovingly. She couldnt have asked for a more loving and understanding man beside her. And now that they had sabreen. They were a complete family. Nothing else should matter.

Part 154: (nicholas)

Nick never felt this way before. Yes he was a player. He loved girls and was chuffed about the fact that they all use to fall at his feet. Even though he knew that it was mostly because of his money and nothing more. Something about this girl pulled at nicks heart. She was beautiful even with the cleft that he found on her gorgeous face. And there was something in her eyes which made him feel like they could relate in some way. He knew that she too had some pain hidden deep within.

Nick couldnt stop staring at her which made her very nervous. He was sure that she could feel his intense gaze on her but she never met his eyes. She nervously took down their orders and rushed away to the kitchen.

Nicky…are you okay?

Huh?err yeah… just hungry

Nick shrugged nonchalantly.

Tasha and tom spoke but nick couldnt concentrate on what they were saying. His eyes kept drifting towards the kitchen door hoping she’ll come back soon.

And when she did, to hand them their drinks, he could hear his heart beating in his ears and was sure that she could hear it too from where she was standing.

She was so different to other girls. She had a certain amount of modesty to her. She wasnt overly friendly but neither was she cold and infriendly.

Nick strained his eyes to her name tag..

Sabreen.

Wow… what an unusual name… but it suited her perfectly because she was truly an unusual girl.

He wished that she would look at him. His heart yearned for her gaze to meet his. Just so he could smile at her and let her know that he too knows what pain is. But he more he wished it, the more she didnt look.

Nick took his time to eat. Wishing they could stay longer. Even if she wouldnt talk to him or look at him, atleast he found peace and happiness in looking at her.

At he end of their meal when she handed them their bill, nick felt agitated. He had to leave. He wouldnt see her again. For a while. Or forever. He wanted to get her number but of what use was it, he had no phone himself. How would he call her? And besides, who was to say the she would even give him hers?

With a heavy heart and a tummy full of hamburger, fries and milkshake, nick, tasha and tom left the restaurant.

For weeks after that nick thought about sabreen. He tried to get her out of his mind. Of what use would it be to pine for a girl he may never see again in his life?

But he couldnt. She was all he thought about and all he dreamt of. But to his surprise, this feeling towards her wasnt normal. It wasnt one of lust or infatuation. He wasnt crushing on her. It was different. Almost as if they were bound somehow to eachoher. As if he knew that she would be the only person who would understand him and be able to comfort him.

Something happened to nick after he seen sabreen. She was his motivation without her even realising it. Without her even knowing about nicks existence.

Nick decided that the past was the past and couldnt haunt him forever. Life was passing by and he was losing out.

He needed to pull himself together and start fresh.

He needed to do something meaningful with his life.

He didnt finish school but that didnt make him a loser. There were so many things he could achieve and he would. He wouldnt wait another day. He would start today and make new memories. Good ones. And he would succeed.

Because even though a puzzle piece may be slightly damaged, it wasnt lost and would still complete a puzzle. He was slightly damaged but he wasnt dead or lost. He was alive and had another chance at life.
